9 Ways to Boost Your Relationship with Yourself

There’s a plethora of information about how to improve your relationships with your friends, family, and colleagues. Have you noticed that you rarely hear about how to have a more efficient connection with yourself?

Your relationship with yourself is the most important of all the ones you have. The issue you have with yourself, is that you don’t know yourself as well as you should.

You may have spent the majority of your life avoiding who you are. We don’t always want to deal with our uncomfortable thoughts or address our shortcomings, which is understandable. However, you can’t run from yourself, so you might as well make you, your own best friend.

Try these methods to establish a stronger relationship with yourself:

1. Start your day with positive thoughts and gratitude. Instead of grabbing your phone to see what missed texts you got, take a moment to spend some time investing in your self-worth. Make a mental list of a few things you’re grateful for. Go over some positive affirmations to get you started for the day.

  • Set the tone of having a great day today.
  • List off your best qualities.
2. Write in your journal. Your ideas and life deserve to be recorded. Make time to write for a set amount of time daily. Show yourself how your life is evolving and how you have overcome things. This will allow you to gain not only insight, but an appreciation for your life as a whole.

3. Remove your avoidance behaviors. Embrace your feelings when you’re emotionally going through it. Don’t run from or cover up your emotions with retail therapy, eating junk, or drinking alcohol. It’s best to sit in your emotions, allow them to play out, and then get it together.

  • Take a breath and pay attention to how your body reacts. Avoiding these emotions just prolongs the cycle, so let it take place.
  • In time, those negative emotions will dissipate without the need for you to run from them.

4. Meditate. Consider this time of reflection as investing quality time with yourself. Start with simply a couple of minutes and when you’re more comfortable, extend the time. By meditating, you’ll understand how your mind works.

5. Take time work on personal development. What is it that you feel needs the most work? You invest a lot of time doing things for others, such as you friends, family, and cohorts. Pause for a minute and spend some time addressing your own needs and concerns.

  • Social abilities
  • Financial skills
  • Networking?
  • Spiritual growth?

6. Let your hair down. Plan some fun time for yourself. Schedule a monthly message, plan a weekend getaway, or take a dance class. Whatever you do to put a smile on your face, do it and as often as you like. It’s your life, so enjoy it to the max!

7. Always forgive yourself. You’ve made a couple of mistakes and may have missed out on some opportunities, we all have. That’s no excuse to beat yourself up about things you can no longer change. Allow yourself to let go of the past and move forward with grace.

8. Groom yourself to a higher standard. Keep up on your appearance. Have a morning routine, where you shower each day and keep your hair done like you like it. Make sure you’re the finest one in your circle of friends. They should always expect you to look your best regardless of the situation. By doing so, you show everyone how much you care about yourself, and they too will respect that about you.

9. Ask for help when you need it. Nobody can manage everything that comes their way. At some point in time, we all need help. Said help may come from a close friend or even a life coach, either way, reach out if you need something and allow others to be that rock for you.

Invest some quality time getting to know you as a person. Become your biggest hype man and keep pushing forward with personal development. Remember, the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself. Protect it at all costs and always love yourself first!!
